Death Index Before 1908

The Holmes County Probate Court has death records from 1867 through 1908. These are handwritten ledger entries. Each entry lists the name, date of death, age, cause of death, and birthplace. Some include parent names. The court is at the Holmes County Courthouse in Millersburg.

You can visit in person or send a written request. Provide the full name and approximate date of death. Staff will search the ledger books. Holmes County's courthouse records survived intact, so the 1867 to 1908 period is relatively complete. The county's Amish community means that some deaths in that era may have been recorded in church records rather than civil records, especially in the earliest years of registration. If you cannot find an entry in the Probate Court ledgers, check church and cemetery records as alternatives.
